Pfizer's patent on Viagra has expired, but the US Food and Drug Administration says the drug will remain on the market. Pfizer, whose patent expires in 2014, won't immediately launch Viagra.
The drug, which works by blocking the enzyme PDE5, is a generic alternative to the erectile dysfunction drug sildenafil, Pfizer's No. 1 drug. It costs about $90 for a bottle of four 100-milligram tablets. The company said the generic, which includes the active ingredient in Viagra, costs about $1,800 a day.
Viagra is a major competitor to the erectile dysfunction drug by patent, but the FDA has allowed generic versions to be sold in the US. Pfizer said that the agency is also allowing the generic version to be sold in the EU and Canada, but that it has not specified how to determine if a generic is appropriate for the market.
The agency said it is considering whether to approve the generic version of Viagra, but said the decision by Pfizer could be appealed if the generic version of the drug is approved by the FDA. The generic version is also being developed.
Pfizer said that while it is studying the drug in more than 20 countries, it hasn't received any official regulatory approval or confirmation. The company said its patent will expire in 2014. Pfizer is seeking approval for its generic version of Viagra to be sold in the US and Canada, but it has not indicated how it will determine if the drug is appropriate for the market.
Image: Pfizer, Pfizer, PfizerThe company has previously announced that it will make the generic version of Viagra available for use in the US and Canada, but that the company hasn't announced if the drug will be approved for use in other markets.
Pfizer said the company will make a decision based on whether the generic version of Viagra will be effective in the US and Canada or whether the FDA approves the generic version. Pfizer is also reviewing whether the company will continue to sell a generic version of Viagra in the US and Canada, which would require Pfizer to license the drug in those markets.
Pfizer is seeking to block two manufacturers' attempts to produce a generic version of Viagra. Pimco, which makes Viagra and Cialis, is trying to produce a generic version of Viagra. A Pimco spokesman said Pfizer hasn't disclosed what the generics will be used for. Cialis, which is also making its way to US and Canadian markets, is a generic version of Viagra.
Pfizer said it has not been notified when the generic version of Viagra will be approved for use in the US and Canada. It has not specified when Pfizer will seek FDA approval for the generic version of Viagra.
In a statement, Pfizer said that it has not received any official information about the expiration of the Viagra patent. The company said it doesn't comment on Pfizer's comment on the expiration of the patent, or on whether the generic version will be approved for use in the US and Canada.
